Justice to Summit
The I&M Canal Bicycle Trail currently runs between Rt. 45 to Rt. 83. Volunteers recruited and supervised by Civic Center Authority have worked to clear and extend the trail east through Justice and Bedford Park to the end of the canal in Summit.
The I&M Canal Civic Center Authority proposes the extension of the existing Forest Preserve District of Cook County I&M Canal Bike Path from its loop over the I&M Canal at LaGrange Road approximately 5,950 feet northeast to the proposed METRA station in Justice.
clear and grade approximately 5,950 feet along the north side of the I&M Canal
install 5,950 feet of ten foot wide asphalt finished multiple-use path consistent with the existing Bike Path
install appropriate trail identification and wayfinding signage
Route 83 to the Confluence
On its west end the I&M Canal Bicycle Trail crosses over the I&M Canal at Rt. 83. A short extension running west from Rt. 83 along the Canal would take trail users out to the spectacular vista at the point of land at the confluence of the Sanitary and Ship Canal and the Cal-Sag Channel. The dual waterfalls of an MWRD water treatment facility landscaped as a public park at the point provides another unique attraction.
create a grade level crossing of the access road on the west side of Route 83
clear and grade approximately 1300 feet along the south side of the I&M Canal
install 1300 feet of ten foot wide asphalt finished multiple-use path consistent with the existing Bike Path
continue the Bike Path to the SEPA Station on the existing access road to the parking lot at the Pump House
install a bike rack at the Pump House parking lot
install appropriate trail identification and wayfinding signage
